Salt can be a witch’s best friend when performing magick and rituals!
It has the ability to absorb energy and hold onto it, so it’s often used to cleanse and purify an area of negative energy, and create protective boundaries.
There are different types of salt; some for cooking/consumption while other types are meant only for witch work (like non edible Black Salt). Magickal work can be done with any kind of salt. No matter what name or color it has, use whatever you have in your kitchen cupboard or can find for a cheap price, because SALT IS SALT! However, some types of salt may be better suited for certain magickal purposes.
Wait so, what is salt in general used for?
Salt has been used for magickal purposes in multiple traditions, mostly for things like protection, cleansing, and healing. It doesn’t channel energy it gathers, but instead absorbs it. Salt has always been used as protection against psychic attacks, and to disable unwanted psychic phenomena.
Black salt…
Black salt is traditionally used for protection and to dispel evil and negative energy, and is also good for keeping something hidden or bound! It also helps to break jinxes/hexes, protection, and to banish unwanted people. It is basically a combination of usual salt mixed with charcoal or other things. But as always, be careful with how much you use and how often, and make sure to always cleanse your black salt to release it from all that negative energy it gathers! The edible kind of black salt is called Hawaiian Lava Salt.
White salt can be used for absorbing negativity, banishing, protection, and healing. White salt can come as kosher, coarse, or table salt, and is an “all purpose” salt that you can add to spells, rituals, and even cooking! It symbolizes purity, unity, and protection. Since it is the color white, white salt all symbolizes new beginnings and creativity.
Sea salt…
Sea salt is often used in purification and cleansing baths. It is ruled by the element of water (coming from the sea), so it usually deals with emotions, and is great for spells to help release and cleanse negativity! Sea salt can also be used for spells and magick involving water, water sources, marine life/mermaids/dolphins, etc.
Research has found that sea salt is now being contaminated with plastic from the pollution in the sea.

This salt is great for protection during astral travel and when spiritually travelling between worlds. For magickal purposes, this salt can be used just like any other salt for cleansing and healing, particularly since it’s a pink color! (which is the color of love, compassion, understanding, and emotion).
Table Salt…
This is often the least expensive of all the salts, and is generally used for cleansing areas and protection circles (read the White Salt section to recall it’s specific abilities).
Is there anything bad about using salt in witchcraft?
Well, salt draws ALL psychic energy forms— it doesn’t always distinguish between “good” or “bad”. This doesn’t mean you should be scared to use it! For ACTIVE use of it, be careful so that it doesn’t disturb your magickal works. Too much salt can reduce psychic activity and make it harder to perform psychic tasks (this is one of the reasons why some witches and priests used to fast and drink only pure water prior to major ceremonies).
How can I use salt?
Salt represents earth, so placing salt on your altar or using it in your practice brings the element of earth to your magickal workings (which is great because there is so much talk about the Sun and the Moon, but look at what is happening to our beautiful planet!!). Infusing salt into spell work can give an added boost. Food and objects can be purified by adding a small amount of salt or placing a small amount of it nearby. A box that is containing salt can purify anything that is placed on it (for example, if you have crystals or anything that is sensitive to being placed in salt or salt water, but put them above the salt!).
I am a closeted witch but enjoy placing crystals in each corner of my room at night for cleansing protection! This can also be done with salt, along with even placing salt in four main corners of your home (like a square with four points). Bowls of salt placed in a room helps to absorb negative energy and disturbances.
Place salt near the front door, back door, an adjoining wall to a troublesome neighbor, or a windowsill.
Throw salt at the front doorstep of someone you wish to avoid, and then turn away without looking back.
Throwing salt in someone’s footsteps can help prevent them from returning.
Salt mixed with sand is a way of forming magick protection circles.
Please be careful when putting salt outside and be mindful that some types can be toxic to wild animals! If you worry about your pets, the simple solution is to place salt in a small glass or jar. Be sure to secure it safely to prevent it from being knocked over.
What about herbal salt?
It’s the same as salt but the herbs you chose and their meanings amplify that power! For example, if you’re making herbal salt for love/protection/and cleansing, you could use parsley mixed with Himalayan pink salt. You can use salt with herbs and other ingredients for spell bottles, to add to your altar or in your home, or even put them near your entrances or on your property, and much more!
There are many ways of using salt in magickal practices and I definitely haven’t covered everything out there! Remember, even adding salt to a meal can be magick.
Be creative with how you want to use salt in your craft!
