Happiness in Flash! Flash! Photography

This is my tee design for the Artwork contest and also my second portfolio piece. Seems quite simple but this took me days to finish: editing, coloring, asking my artsy-fartsy friends for criticisms, printing the shirt itself (which took me hours looking for a good printing place), etc.
Here’s my portfolio write-up:
“I had rescued the moment by using my camera and in that way had found how to stop time and hold it. No one could take that image away from me because I owned it.”-The Lovely Bones
“What makes you happy?” This was a question posed to me a few weeks ago and I couldn’t think of a concrete answer because many things and people make me happy. I went through my blog and browsed through the collection of thoughts and images which embodies me and finally thought of something that makes me happy: taking photographs.
I thought of creating an art piece that would best represent that. I was inspired by Joe Lifrieri, a visual artist, who had colorful digital doodles and customized drawings of cameras. This led me to copy an exact image of a film camera. I chose a film camera since one aims for perfection: the perfect shot and the perfect moment before clicking that button for film is precious, unlike a digital or a single-lens reflex camera. You cannot erase or regenerate film after it has been used in taking a photo.
I added the hands since it represents my own, and the hearts seemingly exploding from the tool because I’d like to think of it as sharing my happiness and my talent with others. This was inspired by Coca Cola’s recent tagline: “Buhay Coke, Buksan mo!” I chose colors from the rainbow in pastel shades to complement the dark colors of the film camera and also added facial features to the camera to personify the tool which gives me much happiness.
/I don’t know if my piece is worth putting on a shirt because I know I could have done better if only I had time back then but I was so bombarded with academic priorities so yeah. Good luck to all of us who joined! 🙂
